Engineering is a field where mathematics is a very important subject, without mathematics solving any complex engineering problem becomes very difficult. Not just civil engineering but in any kind of engineering knowledge of mathematics  is a must. That's why in order to appear for engineering entrance exam mathematics background is required. most of the modern civil engineering projects you see, a lot of complex mathematics is required.

So the answer is yes maths is essential for pursuing civil engineering .

If you dont like maths or you are poor in maths then dont worry as civil engineering requires basic maths and you do not need to learn maths in details .Also maths will be in the curriculum only for 4 semesters that is only 2 years so if you know basics of maths like calculus and geometry then you will not face any problem in this field.

Civil engineering  is a engineering stream which requires exploration and deep understanding and imagination so it is not like other engineering courses where bookish knowledge is everything .
